DC-ALT co-sponsored a public event at The Writer's Center in Bethesda, MD with German slam champion Bas Böttcher and DC bilingual poets Pages Matam (French) and Carlos Parada Ayala (Spanish). Moderated by DC-ALT Coordinator Yvette Neisser Moreno, the event featured performance and discussion of how a poem travels across languages. Presented in cooperation with the Goethe Institut and The Writer’s Center.
We held our first annual DC-ALT Summer Social at Bistro La Bonne in Washington, DC. Members met for dinner, happy hour specials, and get-to-know-you activities.

We held a discussion about the March issue of Words Without Borders (Writing from Venezuela). This issue includes several short stories and poems by Venezuelan writers in both the Spanish original and English translation, placed in the context of the country’s ongoing political crisis. Sunday, May 4, 2:30 p.m. Monthly meeting: Nancy Arbuthnot discussed a trilingual translation experience of translating Vietnamese poet Le Pham Le into English for a trilingual edition (Vietnamese, English, Japanese) and traveling to Japan for the book launch.

Sunday, Apr. 6: At our monthly meeting, Dr. Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak made a presentation on translating contemporary Persian poetry. (Notes available.) Dr. Karimi-Hakkak is chair of the Middle Eastern Studies Department at the University of Maryland, College Park.
Presented by the DC-Area Literary Translators Network (DC-ALT) and Loch Raven Review, this discussion featured DC-ALT members Nancy Naomi Carlson (French), Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak (Persian), Danuta E. Kosk-Kosicka (Polish), and Katherine E. Young (Russian). Each translator read one or two poems in the original and translation, offering insight into the art of poetry translation, and took questions from the audience.
